I would have never imagined that our family would be part of a turtle release in Mexico, not once but twice! Our first turtle release in Mexico was several years ago in Puerta Vallarta at the Grand Maya Resort. The second occasion was with Olive Ridley baby sea turtles at the Ayotlcalli Sea Turtle Rescue at Playa Blanca, just outside of Zihuatanejo. I think we all enjoyed the second occasion as it was more personal and informative. I highly recommend a visit!

A baby sea turtle release in Zihuatanejo is a fantastic way to spend the evening with your family and teach yourself and your kids something about animal rescue, protection, and conservation. It was fun, exciting, educational, and let’s face it, those baby sea turtles are simply adorable! You can’t help but cheer each one of them until they reach the ocean and swim away into the big, blue sea.

There are going to be some people who think… “Leave those sea turtles alone! Stop disturbing them!” I say, “Bug off.” If you read about this rescue program you will find these little guys and their mothers must defeat several obstacles to survive including poachers and dogs. And in reality, getting them into the water does not guarantee their survival. They are still vulnerable to many threats like fishing nets, pollution, and even sharks. So if we can help by learning about them and releasing them, I say, “Let’s do it.”

If you are looking for a turtle release in Zihuatanejo, Playa Blanca is located outside the city of Zihuatanejo a little further down the coast from the airport. I love Playa Blanca because it is away from the crowds and the tourists. This was a fantastic trip and there is another post HERE that displays the beauty of this beach.
