For the month of April we made the town of San Ignacio Belize our home. It is a small, dusty yet quaint town, across from another small town, Santa Elena. They are only minutes from the Guatemala border and about two hours from the ocean.

Visiting San Ignacio Belize

San Ignacio has plenty of tour companies and Ma n’ Pop stores with a little bit of everything. ( David is going to hate me for his headshot below but I couldn’t help myself. ) The towns are separated by two bridges over the Macal River, which many townspeople use for swimming and washing laundry near the low bridge. The Hawkesworth Bridge is below. It’s prettier then my photo lets on. We were driving and I couldn’t get a steady shot.

In downtown San Ignacio Belize there is a water-spray feature that is great for keeping cool on those hot, humid days. Our kids had a ball getting wet in their good clothes after a Saturday morning in our Bible ministry. Afterwards we went to the town market for fresh fruit and vegetables. By the time we were done shopping the girl’s dresses were dry. I also picked up a bottle of homemade wine and a jar of homemade jelly at the market. The jelly was tasty. The wine, not so much.

Our Bible Ministry is One Way to See The Town

In our Bible ministry we talk with everyone, regardless of race, wealth or lack thereof, and age. There is a Low-German group in the Bible congregation of Santa Elena. This group makes a special effort to reach the Mennonite communities in the Cayo district of Belize. There are two separate communities. One uses machinery and the other does not. I think the best way to discover an area is in our Bible ministry. Some of the photos below were taken during our ministry.

Small Towns & Creepy Crawlies

In small town Belize you will find all kinds of critters, including Scorpions and Tarantulas. Working past the light on our truck, Brad walked home one evening. He heard scampering on the gravel road and David used his iPhone light to find many little friends just steps away… One Scorpion tried to make a corner in our house his home. He found himself on the bottom of David’s boot after Brad’s photo opportunity. I can handle Geckos in the house, but not Scorpions. Signing off in Belize, Tina
