My first impression of Lake Chapala wasn’t a good one. I made my opinion only by the stories I heard about the influx of expats and tourists to Lake Chapala and Ajijic in the past decade or so. However, after visiting the Malecon in Chapala for only a few hours on one Monday morning, as we traveled home to Michoacan from Guadalajara, I finally saw the appeal of Chapala, the lake, and the surrounding towns. Lake Chapala is beautiful Mexico.
Sure, we saw white people on the Malecon, several in fact. We even had a long talk with a cheerful and energetic man from the North about living in Mexico and how our whole family came to be here. But we were not inundated with expats and the place did not have a tourist feel about it. Maybe that is because it was a Monday morning. I don’t know. But the fact remains, I liked it. I liked Lake Chapala and I wouldn’t mind spending some more time there and learning more about this part of Mexico.

I cannot express my gratitude enough for you taking the time to write these articles about your family experiences in your lives there in Mexico. You are warrior indeed…Despite trials and errors and everlasting memories you and your family will have in the many years to come, I applaud you for marching on each day, rain or shine.
I currently work for the County of Los Angeles, but in 8 more years, I will be eligible to retire with full benefits. I am seriously considering Chapala, my medical being paid in full upon retirement won’t mean anything there in MX. The change in life style, calmer pace than here in Los Angeles/Long Beach, CA., the cost of living, the scenery, the people and much more… Wow! I almost wish I can retire 2morrow ;)
I just applied for my passport this past Wed @ the post office, $168.00 OUCH! (Normally something like $113.00 but by the time the USPS adds in their processing commission, their photocopy fees, etc. $168.00). I want to visit say in October after the rain, to meet residents there in Chapala, and periodically throughout the year so i won’t be a total stranger when the day comes. (It’s only myself)
