We have lived in beautiful Mexico for three years and live only 45 minutes away from Janitzio but we just visited the island and climbed to the top of the statue this past August. Janitzio is a beautiful little island located in Lake Patzcuaro in Michoacan, Mexico. You can reach the island via boat from Patzcuaro’s pier. There is a charge and I can’t exactly remember the price… sorry! But I do remember enjoying the trip and would highly recommend it if you are in the area. Just be ready for a workout because there are lots of steps to get to the top!

They put this water lily in the lake to clean the water. It’s not someplace you would want to swim.

Janitzio is very well-known for the Day of the Dead celebrations.

These fishermen use butterfly-shaped nets to catch the whitefish Janitizo is famous for. They put on a water dance routine when the boats approach! It was quite beautiful and worth a tip.

This shrimp soup was delicious! Many indigenous Purepecha live here and their cooking was wonderful!

I took this to try to show you how tight the stairs were near the top of the statue. There was a line going up and a line coming down.

There are other little inhabited islands in Lake Patzcuaro too.

Hi Tina, found your blog looking for options for my family. Looking to reunite with my husband who is Mexican. Kids are 6, 7 and 14. How do I join your blog?

I really love the dancing child photo. My seven year old boy needs to be with his Dad and used to dance like that!

I love Janitzio. I’ve been there several times, 7 or 8 perhaps. I’ve seen those dances live, & they really are something!
There are lots & lots of places to eat there, & the fresh cooked fish platters are delicious! And I remember the Morelos statue so well, what a journey just to get up to it, & so much to see along the way. I recall there was a fast way, & the long way, I did them both, what a workout it was!!! I actually made friends with a family there, after going many times, I believe their language is Tarásco, & the guy I knew owned the “Lancha” called Nora, somewhere, packed away, are boxes & boxes of developed pictures from all of my trips, because back then, we still used kodak film, not digital… LOL
I stayed in Patzcuaro overnight, and ate at the “Casa de las 11 pizzas” as I recall, I wasn’t too impressed with the pizza, but it was edible, & I just loved it there, each time I went. Now Patzcuaro is a place where I’d enjoy living! You are really living it up, I kind of envy you in a way, doing what I wish I could’ve done.
My best to you & your family!

Thank you, Robin! We do love traveling and new adventures but we aren’t really living it up ;-) Hahaha! We have many days at home resting, homeschooling, and in our Bible ministry. I just don’t post many of those boring pics… well maybe sometimes, but those posts never get as many hits as my photography and travel posts :-) Hahaha!
